London Visit

Our school council joined with the school council with Beetham School to visit The Houses of Parliament. We had an early start but it was certainly worth it!  We walked arounf London taking in the sights such as Downing Street, Whitehall, Horseguards Parade, Buckinghm Palace, The Mall (including the changing of the guard), Thames, London Eye and then Parliament itself.  We took part in a superb tour watching a House of Lords and House of Commons debate and then we took part in a Voting activity. We thought about the rights of women and how they fought and protested for the right to vote.

Swim Safe Day!

Year 5 took part in a Swim Safe activity at Windermere, organised by the RNLI and ASA. They had a talk on swimming safely in open water, discussing the flag system. The instructors got them to practise calls for help and safety positions. Getting into the wetsuits was entertaining! Once in the water they practised swimming, joining together to help each other and the distress calls. They finished with a straddle jump in to the lake from the jetty. It was an amazing- if a little chilly- experience.

Showtime at the MOSI

Year 4 recently visited the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester to support their topic on Electricity. It was a very busy day with so much to see and do! The ‘Circuit City’ show was a  truly electrifying experience in which the children learnt all about electrical circuits and how a dynamo works: Grace peddled like mad to power up a hairdryer giving Oliver the hairstyle he desired, whilst Zoe listened to the radio via a huge hat.  All in all everyone had a good time  whether it was being entertained by a talk about steam locomotives and missing limbs, exploring the Air and Space Hall  or by getting hands on in the Experiment Lab.

Thanks to our parent helpers Mrs Ogden, Mrs Canwell and Mrs Wild, not forgetting Mrs Milligan and Mrs Moorby. These wonderful trips can only happen with your support.

Jitterbugs!

Yet another exciting day for Year 2! Yesterday,  Jo Gill, an ambassador for STEM,  held a science workshop to support our current topic on Electricity (no pun intended, honest!). To create their ‘jitterbugs’ the children had to make a complete circuit using a motor. It was very fiddly and required lots of patience but was worth the effort. Many thanks to Jo, her mum and daughter , as well as the PTA for funding it!

Make a picnic at QES

Year 2 had a fabulous time making their own seaside picnic at QES last week. The 6th Formers (all Food Technology students) were great! Once the children had their plastic aprons on, they showed the children what to do, watching closely as they practised their cutting, slicing and grating skills. The resulting pizzas looked and tasted amazing. The children were able to select from a wide range of accompanying salad and I was impressed by the amount of salad leaves devoured. A trip to see the A Level Art and D&T exhibition followed and then it was onto the exotic fruit tasting session, where everyone was encouraged to try something different. To finish off, it was back to the kitchen to decorate a cupcake disguised as an ‘ice cream’ – definitely a high point.

Thank you so much to Kyle, Kiera, Erin, Erica, Charlotte, Kate and of course Mrs Falcus for inviting us and for making it such a wonderful experience. Year 2 enjoyed every minute!

South Lakes Pupil Parliament – School Council

Year 5 and 6 representatives of our school council have attended the final South Lakes Pupil Parliament of this academic year. During which the children worked with other schools on team building activities, explored issues relating to children’s rights and needs, diversity and looked at identity.  After which the children delivered a presentation about children’s rights including exploring the right to education.  Finally the children were awarded certificates to recognise their contribution to the parliament over the year.

Athletics Winners

Recently we attended the local athletics tournament held at Casterton, Sedbergh Prep. We took a superb team and with our Year 6 children on their outdoor and adventurous residential, many children had to race  in different classes. For example, our Year 2 children raced in the Year 3 events etc. Impessively we had many individual wins and we came 2nd overall.  Congratulations to everyone who took part.

We have celebrated our individual winners and presented their certificates – very well done!

Windmills! Tick, tock! We have lots of golf pros in Year 2.

Clay faces

On Friday we went up into the woods, to make clay faces. We had a brilliant time finding natural materials for the features. As you can see they looked brilliant.IMG_20160624_101329IMG_20160624_101118
