Food Rationing during World War Two

Rosie’s Grandma, Mrs Burnett, came to school for the afternoon to talk about the food that people ate during the Second World War. She brought in a basket of provisions that rationing provided for a grown man for a week. There were a few slices of bacon, some corned beef, a little margerine, butter, sugar and cheese. The children couldn’t believe that there was no pizza or pasta!

Mrs Burnett kindly baked some cakes following war time recipes, when eggs were powdered and flour was supplemented with potatoes. We tried carrot and apple jam, which was delicious and had some bread and dripping. We had a wonderful afternoon finding out about rationing and the healthy diet of our great grandparents.

Michaelmas Concert

Well done to all of our children who took part in the school concert at the end of term. We had a wonderful array of instruments played by a large amount of children from Year 2 to Year 6.  Our choir also sang two songs with superb harmonies.  Congratulations to all involved.

Army Training for Year 4

Regimental Sergeant Major Jack Wadsworth, visited Year 4 to make sure the army recruits were up to scratch. The children listened to their orders and became a disciplined force ready to go to war at any moment. They learnt how to march up and down the playground and turn in different directions. There was lots of shouting.

Year 4 rugby

Year 4 went to Casterton to play in a tag rugby festival for the under 9’s. Amazingly they won all six of their matches. They didn’t let one try  in from their opposing teams. They were also great sportsmen and ambassadors for St Marys, as they shook everyone’s hand and led the cheers for their opposing team. Brilliant!

Remembrance

Jack and Daisy, our head boy and girl took part in the Remembrance service held at St Mary’s Church. Many thanks for their contribution to this very important service of remembrance.

Owl visit to Nursery

On Wednesday the owls came to visit. We learnt that owls stand on one leg when they are asleep, that not all owls say “twit twoo” and that they fly silently. All the children had a turn at stroking an owl called “Cuddles” and held an owl called “Star”. We loved seeing the owl and have been really enjoying the story “Owl babies”.

Year 1 know it Owls

A wonderful visitor from The Owl Sanctuary visited us today and brought along Inda, Star, Gizmo and Cuddles – her owls! We prepared some questions and found out all there is to know about different species of Owls.

Did you know:

  1. Owls only rest half of their brains at one time
  2. Females go ‘twit’ and males go ‘twoo’
  3. Owls have 3 eyelids!
  4. An owl can hear your heart beating!

We have had a great morning and didn’t want it to end! IMG_20171108_114033[1] IMG_20171108_114030[1] IMG_20171108_113009[1] IMG_20171108_113113[1] IMG_20171108_113924[1]
